ookk Teach a man how to fish - FIVESIXTEEN PROJECT

Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.
Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime.

Does FiveSixteen Project provide fishing and tackle? Well, not exactly. An old saying, with a profound meaning, has so much to do with the mission field.

With over 25 years of mission trips experience, transformation of a community by far has been the most rewarding. From the back rural areas of Papua New Guinea to the countryside of Moldova and Africa, seeing community development come together has been very rewarding. Projects accompanied with local volunteers and resources, are what makes this possible. Traditionally, this has not always been the case.

You’ve seen it before, an NGO will come in with the funds, supplies, and a team; the workforce will build in record time habitat housing, schools, medical facilities, or perform volunteer services, then hand over the finished work to the locals. This is also known as a “turn-key project”. Give a man a fish.

Community development, in needy communities abroad, is largely absent from sustainable livelihood practices, due in part, by the situated character of stagnant community development agencies, the inability to pinpoint a specific need and the continued absence of consistent resources. This leaves non-governmental agencies with providing 100% of funding and manpower.

Feed him for a day.

The most successful efforts include community and resident engagement and action, working together with existing institutions and non-governmental agencies. Teach a man to fish.

FivevSixteen Project’s value-based community development (VBCD), is a strategy for co-producing with communities for a durable and sustainable, community-driven development. FiveSixteen Project builds on the assets already found in a community; training and mobilizing any skill level volunteer or organization, to come together and build on existing but often uncovered assets for a project need.

Community volunteers will learn skills like dividing project phases, concrete pours, wall construction both financially and structurally, eliminating a technocratic approach practice. As a foundational cornerstone, we value the inherent worth, dignity and abilities of all individuals and communities with the utmost respect and meaningful participation. This is followed by asking communities to share their gifts and resources and connect people with the same value and passion.

Feed him for a lifetime.
